In 2022, Metro Edge announced the groundbreaking of its first data center, located in Chicago’s Illinois Medical District. The 5-story, 191,000 square foot facility on Chicago’s West Side is set to provide mission-critical data storage to hospitals, healthcare providers, universities and corporations while also providing workforce training for local residents interested in pursuing careers in the data center industry.

EdgeIR spoke to Craig Huffman, CEO of Metro Edge at the PTC’24 conference in Hawaii and the company’s approach to assess market trends in the edge space.

Huffman notes that Metro Edge’s commitment to community engagement sets the company apart in the urban development sphere. In Chicago, Metro Edge is actively collaborating with local communities to ensure that its projects align with their needs and aspirations.

In the Chicago data center market, Metro Edge continues to closely monitor several key trends, according to Huffman. With the increasing demand for data storage and processing capabilities, particularly in sectors such as finance, healthcare, and technology, Huffman sees significant opportunities for growth. Additionally, the rise of edge computing is reshaping the landscape, driving demand for localized data centers that can deliver low latency services to end-users.

Huffman also discusses Metro Edge as the exclusive developer for IMD1, as the real estate firm spearheads efforts to regenerate the west side of Chicago. Our strategies focus on fostering economic development, creating job opportunities, and enhancing infrastructure to support community growth. Through collaborative partnerships with local stakeholders, including government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and residents, the company aims to create a positive and sustainable impact on the community.

Metro Edge is also committed to leveraging big data applications and edge computing technologies to drive innovation and efficiency. Huffman says the company’s plan includes expanding its footprint in the edge computing space, investing in state-of-the-art infrastructure, and partnering with industry leaders to deliver cutting-edge solutions to its clients.
